on ubuntu with mono

I have here Ubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid Ibex) with its version of mono 1.9.1, and MageGuild 1.1.1. After installing libmono-winforms-2.0, I'm able to start MageGuild and I see the menu screen with animated flames behind it, but I can't find any inputs that have any effect. Mouse clicks, arrow keys, letters, nothing moves the menu selector or starts a game. Any ideas?

The only output on the terminal is "Could not set X locale modifiers."

Hmm. Well, my first thought would be that your keyboard input is getting fouled, somehow. First thing to try would be to edit your defaultOptions.xml file in a text editor of some sort, and replace UseMouse="False" with UseMouse="True" . That should turn the mouse on by default; after that, see if you can click on Options, or anything else on the main menu. If you can get the options screen to load, then try rebinding your keys, and see if that lets you get your keyboard stuff working.

If that doesn't work...well, I'm not entirely sure where else to go, from there. I've got a spare PC or two around here, I'll see if I can't get a box up to test this issue locally.

Okay, the mouse works when UseMouse is on. The keyboard seems to behave as expected when binding keys in the Options screen, and I can type a name when prompted for my character name, but it still doesn't seem to work in the menus or to issue commands during the game.

Playing with only the mouse is a little tedious, but it gives me some idea of what the game is like. I finished the tutorial and I look forward to playing the rest.

Ok. Well, that definitely helps me narrow down the problem. Unfortunately, I can't really fix it without an environment to test it in. I'll try to get an Ubuntu box up in the next couple days here, see if I can get this corrected.

Just as a heads-up, this issue has been traced down and fixed, as well as a couple other icky Mono-compatibility issues. MG 1.2 will probably be released very soon, please give that a shot and make sure everything's working right.
